And so it begins…

by Derek on Aug.13, 2009, under plain talk

Some out of the way outfit called the Alliance Defense Fund is suing the City of Cleveland for its domestic partner registry, started in May, according to this PD article.

The sad thing is, this is pretty much open and shut…in the Alliance Defense Fund’s favor.

The constitutional amendment that was supposedly defining marriage pretty much stomped all right that any two adults who aren’t married have to enter into any kind of intimate agreement (yes, heterosexual couples who have lived together forever but aren’t married, this includes you).  So all it takes is some knucklehead(s) with a lawyer to say “Hey, that’s unconstitutional!” and that’s all she wrote.

Here’s the text from the Ohio Constitution:

Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this state and its political subdivisions. This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage

I told you not to vote for Issue 1 back in 2004 but 62% of you did.  Some folks were so blinded by their animus of gay folks or gay marriage that they offered up their own rights as sacrifice.

I am one who believes that marriage is both a state-sanctioned function and a religious one.  These parts should stay distinct and I say this as a Christian and as a believer in the separation of church and state.  The state makes the rules for the state and the church makes the rules for the church.  Adults of able mind should be able to enter any kind of agreement on their own volition as long as it is mutually agreeable to all parties.  I, for one, don’t need to be a party to someone’s civil union or marriage, for that matter, unless it’s my own.
